Baby Sling Recall By Canada:A Baby Sling Recall has been announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Health Canada, and the manufacturer Infantino, LLC for two baby sling products that have proven to be defective and dangerous. Three infant fatalities were reported in 2009. About one million baby slings are being recalled in the US, and about 15,000 in Canada.
The baby sling recall press release from the CPSC doesn't specify what the problem is, but this is probably related to a March 12 CPSC warning about the risk of suffocation for infants being carried in one of these products. Since infants have weak neck muscles, according to the warning, "The sling’s fabric can press against an infant’s nose and mouth, blocking the baby’s breathing and rapidly suffocating a baby within a minute or two."
The specific products affected by the baby sling recall are SlingRider and Wendy Bellissimo Sling, both made by Infantino, and both made in China and Thailand. Owners of these products can call Infantino for their choice of a replacement: "a Wrap & Tie infant carrier, or a 2 in 1 Shopping Cart Cover, or a 3 in 1 Grow & Play Activity Gym." Heck, they're even throwing in a free rattle!
